International School Award

The International School Award (ISA) celebrates the achievements of schools that do exceptional work in international education. Fostering an international dimension in the curriculum is at the heart of the British Council’s work with schools, so that young people gain the cultural understanding and skills they need for life work in today’s world. Elmridge Primary School have achieved the silver award and are now work towards full accreditation.

Elmridge Primary School’s international work includes collaborative projects with schools in Spain and Pakistan covering diverse areas like comparing breakfasts in Spain and the UK, sharing games and traditional nursery rhymes in England and Spain as well as dance workshops inspired by the poetry of Garcia Lorca.

You can view our International School Award presentation.

In 2017 we made contact with a variety of new partner schools ready for our application for the full accreditation.  We continue to establish and strengthen these relationships now in 2018.

This year as a school we have created a thorough action plan to further establish our links with our partner schools.  The action plans have included things such as: visual art pieces, photography work, cultural events, music and healthy snacks.  Some of our children created (with minimal support) a PowerPoint to be used during their own Assembly to present some of the work produced to the rest of the school.  We also hosted a whole school afternoon dedicated to our international work which produced wonderful work that has been on display throughout the school for everyone to appreciate and enjoy!

We are currently applying for the full accreditation ISA.  International work is embedded at Elmridge and it continues to grow and thrive; engaging the children and expanding their horizons.

Elmridge Primary’s International commitment

The international work at the school has been established for over 15 years. The Senior leaders of the school have been instrumental in supporting the international curriculum: the Head of School is a fluent Spanish speaker who has developed the teaching Spanish within the school from Nursery to Year 6. the school is well known for its foreign language teaching.

For many years the school has been committed to staff professional development to secure the delivery of an outstanding international curriculum. Over the last 4 years, 7 members of staff have participated in Erasmus + cultural and language trips to Spain. The school has regularly organised International events such as Spanish Celebration day and Latin America Week. The school’s population has a rich ethnic mix.

We have encouraged parents to support our international events for example in our South Asia Week when parents delivered an assembly and Chinese New Year which was celebrated with a Chinese culture week Three years ago, the school welcomed an exchange teacher from China for a week funded by the Confucius Institute and the Head visited China. During the last two years, teachers have begun to develop links with two partner schools abroad and last year we ran a number of joint projects with schools in Pakistan and Spain which led us to apply for the ISA Intermediate. We have recently made contact with two new partner schools in Qatar and Singapore ready for our application for the full accreditation.

If you think you could support the school in our international activities, we’d love to hear from you.
